MTN Nigeria has reported a profit after tax of approximately ₦1.17 trillion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, representing a 55.3 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025. The latest MTN Nigeria profit 2026 figures show that the telecommunications company is not just bringing in more revenue.
Its profitability is growing at an even faster pace, raising fresh interest in what is driving the performance of one of Nigeria's largest mobile network operators. According to its financial results released on October 30, 2026, MTN Nigeria recorded service revenue of ₦4.61 trillion, an increase of 23.7 per cent year-on-year.
Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 36.8 per cent to ₦2.6 trillion, while the EBITDA margin expanded by 5.5 percentage points to 56.9 per cent. The company also reported earnings per share of ₦55.60, up 55.3 per cent over the nine-month period.
MTN's profit is growing faster than its revenue
One of the most interesting details in the latest results is the difference between revenue growth and profit growth. Service revenue increased by 23.7 per cent, while profit after tax rose by 55.3 per cent. In other words, the company recorded a much faster increase in its bottom line than in the money it earned from services.
That difference points to improved profitability and operating efficiency during the period. The expansion in EBITDA margin suggests that MTN Nigeria retained a larger share of revenue as operating earnings after accounting for operating costs.
It is worth remembering that revenue, EBITDA and profit after tax measure different things. Revenue reflects income from services, EBITDA gives an indication of operating performance before certain expenses, while profit after tax is what remains after expenses, finance costs and tax.
For readers following how companies make money in Nigeria, these distinctions matter. A company can report impressive revenue and still struggle to convert it into profit. MTN's latest results show that its earnings grew faster than its service revenue during the period.
Data is becoming an increasingly important growth driver
The figures also underline the importance of mobile data to MTN Nigeria's business. Data revenue increased by 35.9 per cent to approximately ₦2.68 trillion, making it a major contributor to the company's overall service revenue.
Active data users rose by 12 per cent to 57.2 million, while total subscribers increased by 10.9 per cent to 94.7 million. The company has also reported growing demand for home broadband and higher network usage. For millions of Nigerians, mobile internet has become essential for work, education, entertainment, communication, banking and business transactions.
That everyday dependence creates a significant commercial opportunity for network operators. It also explains why the market is paying close attention to mobile data plans and broadband options in Nigeria, particularly as consumers look for reliable connections without spending beyond their budgets.
The company is investing in its network
MTN Nigeria's capital expenditure, excluding leases, increased by 14.2 per cent to ₦864.8 billion during the nine-month period. The investment is intended to support network capacity, coverage and service quality as more subscribers use data-intensive services.
The company also reported free cash flow of ₦1.2 trillion, up 57.5 per cent year-on-year. This is an important part of the story. A growing subscriber base and higher data usage create opportunities, but they also require continuous investment in infrastructure.
More people using the network means greater pressure on capacity, reliability and coverage. For customers, the question is whether this investment will translate into a noticeably better everyday experience: fewer interruptions, stronger coverage, faster data speeds and more dependable service.
What MTN's management says about the results
MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola said the company delivered a strong third quarter, with service revenue growing by 19.7 per cent during Q3. He also noted that profitability grew faster than revenue, with Q3 EBITDA increasing by 32.8 per cent and the EBITDA margin reaching 58.7 per cent.
According to the company, growth is increasingly being driven by higher subscriber numbers, deeper data adoption, increased usage and demand for home broadband. The company also reported that core mobile money revenue more than doubled, increasing by 102.2 per cent, while its airtime and data credit service continued recovering after resuming under a multi-partner model.
Is MTN's growth translating into better customer value?
The financial results are impressive, but there is another side to the story. Customers do not experience revenue growth or EBITDA margins directly. They experience network availability, data prices, call quality, customer service and the ease of resolving problems.
As MTN reports stronger earnings, customers will naturally want to see continued improvements in the services they pay for. That makes how to compare mobile networks in Nigeria an increasingly relevant question. Subscribers are not only choosing a network based on coverage or price.
They are also considering reliability, customer support, digital services and value for money. The company's investment in network capacity is a positive development, but the real test will be the quality of service customers experience across different locations.
What happens next?
MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its medium-term guidance of average service revenue growth of at least the low-20 per cent range and EBITDA margins in the mid-to-high 50 per cent range. The company will need to maintain its growth momentum while managing operating costs, infrastructure demands, energy expenses and changing customer expectations.
For now, the latest results present a strong financial picture. Revenue is growing, data adoption is expanding, and profits are increasing at a faster rate than sales. But as the numbers make headlines, one question remains important for the millions of Nigerians who use the network every day: will stronger financial performance also mean a better experience for customers?
