Imagine checking your data balance, buying airtime or asking a chatbot for help, only to discover that the same interaction could also earn you an entry into a cash reward draw.
That is the idea behind MTN Zigi Rewards, a customer engagement campaign that has put MTN's AI-powered digital assistant in the spotlight.
Launched in August 2026, the campaign combines everyday digital self-service activities with opportunities to win cash prizes. According to the campaign announcement, eligible customers can earn rewards through qualifying interactions with Zigi, with advertised cash prizes ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦100 million.
But before you start sending messages to a chatbot and expecting money to appear in your account, there are a few things worth understanding.
What exactly is MTN Zigi Rewards?
Zigi is MTN's AI-powered digital assistant. It helps customers access services and information through conversational interactions rather than navigating several menus or waiting for a customer care representative.
Customers can use Zigi to check their balances, purchase airtime and data bundles, manage data usage, access selected offers, make enquiries and receive support.
MTN Zigi Rewards adds a promotional layer to this existing service. Through the campaign, customers who complete approved activities through Zigi may receive CashToken rewards that give them opportunities to participate in prize draws.
The campaign is powered by CashToken Rewards Africa
The important word here is qualifying. Not every message sent to Zigi should automatically be treated as an entry into a cash draw. Customers should check the applicable campaign terms and the activity requirements before assuming that an interaction qualifies.
How can customers win?
The campaign announcement describes three reward opportunities.
1. CashToken rewards and the weekly draw
Customers who complete qualifying activities through Zigi can receive a CashToken reward. These rewards provide entries into a weekly draw, with advertised cash prizes ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦100 million.
The reward is an opportunity to win, not a guarantee that every customer who uses the chatbot will receive cash.
2. Daily reward opportunities
The campaign also announced a daily opportunity for the first 1,000 customers who complete qualifying activities.
Activities identified in the campaign announcement include buying airtime, purchasing data, using Zigi's Assist feature and other approved interactions.
The daily allocation is limited, so customers should not assume that completing an eligible activity at any time automatically qualifies them for a reward.
3. The weekly streak and draw
Customers who engage with Zigi on at least seven days within a week can qualify for the Weekly Streak and Draw, where selected winners may receive a ₦10,000 voucher.
Again, qualifying for the draw is not the same as being guaranteed a voucher.
How do you access Zigi?
MTN says customers can access Zigi through several digital channels, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, its website and the myMTN NG app.
The official MTN WhatsApp contact listed for Zigi is 0903 300 0001.
You can also visit MTN's official Zigi information page to confirm the current access channels and available features.
For ordinary conversations, MTN says users do not need to register or even have an MTN line. Purchases and other authenticated transactions may require additional verification.
Zigi is available through chat in English. On the myMTN NG app, the voice feature also supports Nigerian Pidgin.
Before you participate, watch out for these details
Cash promotions naturally attract attention, but customers should take a moment to understand the conditions.
First, confirm that you are interacting with the genuine MTN Zigi service. Do not rely on random links shared in group chats or direct messages.
Second, understand which activities qualify. Buying data, checking a balance or asking a general question may not all be treated in the same way under the campaign rules.
Third, understand how rewards are allocated, when draws take place and how winners are notified.
Finally, never disclose your password, OTP, PIN or sensitive banking information to someone claiming to be an MTN representative. A genuine prize should not require you to reveal confidential security details to a stranger.
Customers should also distinguish MTN Zigi Rewards from other products carrying the CashToken name. MTN Play's separate CashToken subscription service has its own subscription terms and pricing. It should not be confused with the Zigi Rewards campaign.
MTN's CEO wants AI to speak African languages
There is another reason the Zigi conversation is worth watching, and it goes beyond the possibility of winning cash.
MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita recently challenged African countries to take a more active role in developing artificial intelligence systems that understand the continent's languages, cultures and priorities.
Speaking in Lagos during an engagement with journalists participating in MTN Nigeria's Media Innovation Programme, Mupita argued that Africa should not simply consume AI technologies developed elsewhere.
He questioned why the continent could not develop its own African foundation models and called for African languages to be better represented in AI systems.
He specifically mentioned languages including Hausa, Yoruba, Shona and Swahili, while noting that thousands of African languages remain underrepresented in online content and global AI systems.
His concern is straightforward: if AI tools cannot understand the languages people speak, a large part of the population risks being excluded from the benefits of the technology.
Mupita also discussed the role of telecommunications companies and industry partnerships in helping make African-language AI possible.
This is particularly relevant to Zigi.
Today, MTN's published customer information says Zigi's chat function supports English, while its voice function on the myMTN NG app supports English and Nigerian Pidgin. That is a useful starting point, but it also shows how much room there is for development.
Imagine being able to ask a digital assistant for help in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or another African language and receive a response that understands not only the words but also the context.
For a customer who is more comfortable speaking a local language than typing in English, that could make digital services more accessible.
It could also create opportunities for African developers, language researchers, universities and technology entrepreneurs working on speech recognition, language datasets and locally relevant AI applications.
Is Zigi just a chatbot, or a glimpse of what comes next?
The distinction matters.
A conventional chatbot may respond to questions or direct users to information. A more capable digital assistant can help users complete tasks, manage services, make purchases and resolve routine problems through conversation.
Zigi already supports several self-service functions, and MTN has outlined plans to expand its capabilities.
As conversational AI develops, telecom companies could use these tools to improve customer support, personalise services and make everyday transactions easier.
But the technology also raises important questions about privacy, security, language inclusion and access to affordable internet-enabled devices.
An AI assistant is only useful if people can access it, understand it and trust it.
What does this mean for Nigerian customers?
For now, MTN Zigi Rewards gives eligible customers another reason to explore the company's digital assistant.
The larger story is that AI is gradually moving from a technology people discuss to something they can interact with during ordinary activities.
Whether someone is checking a balance, buying data, getting customer support or accessing a reward opportunity, conversational AI is becoming part of the customer experience.
And if Ralph Mupita's call for African-language AI gains momentum, the next generation of digital assistants could become much more relevant to people across the continent.
For now, the practical question is simple: have you tried Zigi, and did it actually make your MTN experience easier?
Because winning a reward is exciting. But having a digital assistant that understands you, speaks your language and solves your problem would be a reward of its own.
